Britain's Treasury chief said Thursday he was cutting short a visit to the United States amid surging coronavirus cases in the U.K., which have rattled business leaders.

This comes after England’s chief medical officer advised people to reduce socialising over the festive period - provoking fears of further damage to the hospitality, travel and leisure sectors.

More than 88,000 COVID-19 cases were recorded Thursday - the highest seen in the pandemic.

Speaking from Califronia, Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said he had already been in contact with business chiefs and industry leaders, and would leave the U.S. earlier than planned.

There is a fear that the latest surge could have a devastating impact on pubs and restaurants over the Christmas period.
