UK Crime and Policing Minister Kit Malthouse defended his ruling party's decisions on COVID-19 Tier restrictions, Brexit negotiations and voting against free school meals during a withering interview on British broadcaster Sky News.

Presenter Kay Burley fired questions at the minister over the varying rules for each tier, at one point saying "I'm already confused" after Malthouse detailed the restrictions.

Malthouse said that each area of the UK has different rules and that "everybody needs to be aware in their area of what the regulations are."

The minister appeared to be uncertain as to whether a region can move out of Tier 3 - the highest restrictions - is the reproductive rate of the infection, or R number, falls below one.

When asked how British businesses can prepare for Brexit during the uncertainty of its outcome, Malthouse said, "You prepare for the worst and hope for the best."

Burley pressed the minister over "ganging up" on England footballer Marcus Rashford, who campaigned for free school meals during holiday time, an issue that was voted against by Conservatives, including Malthouse.

"I don't think this is really a ganging up I mean, it's standard practice during any debates for political parties to issue briefs with suggested alliances," said Malthouse.
