Democratic New York mayoral candidate Andrew Yang says the increase in anti-Asian violence in the city should be taken "very seriously."

Yang visited  Xi'an Famous Foods in Chinatown to get a sense of how Asian-Americans are dealing with the spike. He told reporters how one of the employees there was recently punched in the face after stepping off the subway.

"He said absolutely nothing to the person," Yang said. "Asian Americans feel targeted and more more at risk than they ever have in my lifetime."

An uptick in attacks on people of Asian descent has been recorded in the city and across the country. "A lot of it is because people blame Asian Americans for the coronavirus," Yang said.
