Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, commanding general of the Army Corps of Engineers said Friday his organization is assigning eight contracts to add about 10,000 temporary patient beds, including the facilities of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City and and the McCormick Place Convention Center.

"The number today is 9693 beds that we are creating for mayors and governors in these eight particular sites," he said.

Some will be for COVID patients, others for non-COVID patients, depending on the wishes of state and local officials.

The work is being coordinated with state officials, as well as with FEMA and the Department of Housing and Human Services.

"Every single site is built to the specifications of the of the medical plan that mayor wants to use and every single site is being done with a different type of a business case," he said.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

The vast majority of people recover from the new virus.
