In a stunning Tweet, US President Donald Trump on Monday blocked all aid to Pakistan and called out India's neighbour for accepting $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years and returning nothing but "lies and deceit and thinking of US leaders as fools."

As per the United States government's foreign aid tracker, between the years 2002 and 2016, the US distributed $14.6 billion worth of aid to Pakistan out of an earmarked 'Obligation' total of $16.266 billion.

The aid peaked in 2011 as the $2.117 billion in aid was distributed to Pakistan, of which $371 million went towards a 'Pakistan Counterinsurgency Fund' and $295 million under 'DOD (Department of Defence) - Foreign Military Financing (FMF) Program, Payment waived'. In comparison, the most aid India has received during that period was $199 in 2006.

A break-up of the aid given by US to Pakistan in 2011

In 2011, 34% of the aid distributed to Pakistan by the US was listed as being for military purposes.

Pakistan has consistently been the second-highest receiver of US aid in the region. Afghanistan, which receives many magnitudes of aid more than anyone else in the region tops the list.

While a significant portion of the aid to Pakistan has been for its support in counter-terror operations in Afghanistan, on several occasions over the last decade, Pakistan has shown a clear unwillingness to take action against terror. There have been numerous terrorist attacks on India that were launched from Pakistani soil, and notably, Osama Bin Laden, the 26/11 plotter, had to be neutralised by US forces in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad where he had been living within close proximity of a Pak military installation for years.
