The El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank in West Texas is seeing lines of cars stretch over a mile each day as the area feels the brunt of massive unemployment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, 1,600 families drove slowly through a zig-zag line that wraps around a southside warehouse district to a makeshift drive-thru staffed with National Guard soldiers.

Without making contact with the passengers, the soldiers placed two fresh cantaloupes, a loaf of bread, and a box of canned food in the trunks, pickups, or back seats of the vehicles.

The food bank warehouse is the center of food distribution in the county, sending boxes to other sites in El Paso.

At one point, the line of cars heading to the food bank stretched over a mile-and-a-half.
