Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has announced a temporary public health order prohibiting all liquor sales citywide after 9 p.m. to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The new measure will go into effect Thursday evening and will cotinue through the remainder of Gov. J.B. Pritzker's stay-at-home order. That order is through April 30.

Lightfoot's order is designed to ensure all businesses and residents are complying with the stay-at-home order.

She says officials have seen people congregating near stores that sell alcohol, particularly during evening hours.

"I understand that times are tough," Lightfoot said at a Wednesday update on the virus. "But if you're a business operating in violation of a stay at home order, you will be held accountable. We have no other choice."

Lightfoot says she personally broke up gatherings of people on the city's North Side on Tuesday, when temperatures reached 80 degrees, the city's warmest day since last fall.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
