As seen from the sky, many places in northern New Jersey that are usually busy with people are empty due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At MetLife stadium, Justin Bieber and South Korean band BTS were scheduled to perform at the venue but the shows have been postponed as a result of the pandemic.

The corona virus has been a gut punch to businesses that depend on social gatherings — restaurants, cinemas, theaters, hotels, airlines, gyms, shopping centers. More than 250,000 stores are now temporarily closed, accounting for nearly 60% of retail square footage, according to Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, a research firm.

Golf courses across the state are closed, as well, as governments try to stop the virus from spreading.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as a fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and can be fatal.

The U.S. has more diagnosed cases in the global pandemic than any other country, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Projections show the nation will see the peak impact of the virus later this month.
