As per a press release by the Yellowstone National Park, the incident occurred near the Observation Point Trail in the Old Faithful Geyser area. Eyewitnesses have recounted the deadly encounter and said that over 50 people were present at a stone's throw away distance from the bison. Some of the people were hardly 5 to 10 feet away from the wild animal when it decided to attack the crowd.

Reports further stated that the girl's parents escaped the attack, but the young girl was unfortunate enough and she ended up becoming the target of the bison. Following the accidental encounter, the girl was taken to the Old Faithful Lodge by her family. She was tended to by the park officials and park emergency medical providers. Once she was treated, the officials released her from the Old Faithful Clinic.

Meanwhile, Yellowstone National Park officials have ruled out that wildlife in the park are too aggressive. They have urged people to give animals their space when they are near a trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area. In addition, they have requested people to stay 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals like bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. They also said that an ideal last resort would be to turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.
