In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old student on Thursday, September 20 was charged for trying to steal a passenger jet from the Orlando Melbourne International Airport, where allegedly he jumped a fence and boarded the aircraft but was quickly detained. The student has been identified as Nishal Sankat, who had a commercial pilot's license but was not qualified to fly an aircraft and hence, did not manage to get the plane moving.

However, the Melbourne Police Chief, David Gillespie, confirmed in a news conference that there was no evidence to indicate a connection to terrorism and although the man's motive is unknown, the police officials have searched his home and vehicle and no weapons have been found and he did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol. Reportedly, the man had parked his car 140 meters away from the plane and kept it running before jumping the airport fence. After he reached the flight deck of the plane, two technicians and two security guards are said to have detained him before getting into the aircraft.

Later, it was confirmed that the American Airlines plane was at a maintenance facility for the installation of a broadband WiFi when the incident took place. The student was charged in the Florida state court with attempted theft of an aircraft, burglary, and criminal trespassing. Nishal Sankat is a dual citizen of Canada and Trinidad and Tobago with no criminal history. Reports suggest that two flights were delayed because of the security breach. Earlier, a similar incident had occurred where an airline worker stole an empty passenger airplane from the Seattle Tacoma International Airport and crashed it near a less populated island.
