One resident of a Maryland nursing home died after contracting COVID-19 in an outbreak that has sickened dozens of the facility's residents and strained its staff, local health officials said on Sunday.

A man in his 90s who was a resident at the Pleasant View Nursing Home died Saturday night after testing positive for COVID-19.

Carroll County Health Officer Ed Singer said at a news conference that 66 residents have tested positive for the virus including 11 who are hospitalized.

The nursing home has 104 beds and is also facing a staffing shortage as staff members say they can't come to work.

Singer said that to his knowledge, no staff members have tested positive for the virus, but some say symptoms are keeping them from coming in.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
