The mayor of Surfside, Florida, says officials should consider tearing down the remainder of a partially collapsed residential building so that a search and rescue operation can resume.

Mayor Charles Burkett said Thursday that concerns over the structural integrity of the standing portion of the building were delaying rescue operations.

The search was put on hold early Thursday morning after officials determined the building is unstable, and could collapse on workers below.

Burkett also met with President Joe Biden on Thursday as he visited officials and families in the area.

He says the president promised federal assistance to help with the effort.
