Spectacular eruptions of red lava from Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily, continued overnight from Monday into Tuesday. The explosions started late Monday, resulting in a huge eruption plume that rose several kilometers (miles) from the top of Etna, according to the Etna Observatory at Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

During the eruptions, lava overflows poured down the volcano's slopes towards the southwest. Shortly after midnight, a lava fountain suddenly reduced in size, but two lava flows continued pouring down, overlapping the flows of the previous eruptive episodes. This is the fifth episode in a series of eruptions from Mount Etna over the past week.
