The daily coronavirus death toll was slightly above 100 in New York state, but the trend continues down, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday.

On Saturday, 109 people died across the state from COVID-19, the Democrat said during his daily press conference. There were 84 deaths on Friday.

The number of daily deaths at about 100 over the past week represents a significant drop from the peak in early April when the number seemed more likely to hit 1,000 than fall below 100. It peaked at 799 deaths on April 8.

The latest tally from Cuomo came as the nation's death toll from the coronavirus was approaching 100,000 on the eve of Memorial Day.

Additionally, the governor also said New York's Mid-Hudson region was ready to begin first phase of reopening Monday. He said officials hoped the Long Island region would be ready by Wednesday.

Cuomo also announced that all New York major sports leagues would be allowed to start their trainings camps immediately.

"We want people to be able to watch sports, to the extent people are still staying home. It gives people something to do. It's a return to normalcy. So, we are working and encouraging all sports teams to start their training camps as soon as possible. And we'll work with them to make sure that can happen," he said.

The coronavirus causes only mild symptoms in many, but it can cause serious illness or death for some, particularly older adults and those with certain health conditions.

The U.S. ranks first in the world in the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Worldwide, the outbreak has infected more than 5.3 million people and killed over 343,000, according to the same Johns Hopkins University tally based on figures supplied by government health authorities around the globe, though it has become increasingly clear that the true numbers are much higher.
