Nurses at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, New York, where 13 people succumbed to the coronavirus in one day continued to battle the spread of the virus on Saturday.

The hospital is caring for a high number of coronavirus patients in the city.

The health workers were presented with flowers by New Yorkers grateful for their service.

New York leads US in the number of cases, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is keeping a running tally.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
