New York City's mayor called the killed of a 1 year old child over the weekend 'heartbreaking' Monday as he started his daily coronavirus briefing.

"I woke up this morning to news that's so painful for this whole city was particularly painful for all of us who are parents, all of us who had a one year old in our lives or have a one year old and that beautiful moment in life full of possibilities," Bill de Blasio said.

Authorities are investigating the shooting that left the infant, Davell Gardner, Jr., dead and injured three adults.

"You can never look away from something like this and be numb to it because it just goes against everything we believe as New Yorkers, we can't let this happen in our city. So I'm just heartbroken today," de Blasio said.

Police said Davell was shot at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday during a cookout near a playground in Brooklyn.

Witnesses said two men jumped out of a car and fired multiple shots at the group before driving away.

Before calling for a moment of silence, de Blasio asked for 'thoughts and prayers' for Davell's family.
