Members of the New York Police Department engaged in an angry confrontation Tuesday with journalists covering protests across the city as a curfew imposed by local authorities came into force.

Thousands of demonstrators defiantly remained on the streets of New York City well past the 8 p.m. curfew put in place Tuesday.

Police officers carrying batons moved people along including members of the media.

At one point an Associated Press TV crew were shoved and forced to abandon their coverage.

The police department announced it would not allow vehicle traffic south of 96th Street in Manhattan after curfew, though residents, essential workers, buses and truck deliveries were exempt.
