PM Modi at UN: 'Delighted to meet Mauritius President Vyapoory'

PM Narendra Modi met the Mauritius President Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory on the sidelines of the UNGA. PM Modi said he was delighted to see the President.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the Mauritius President Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory on the sidelines of the High-Level Segment of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday evening. The meeting took place after Modi's address to the General Assembly.

'Proud moment'

Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth tweeted about the meeting in the evening and said that it was a proud moment seeing the PM Modi and President Vyapoory alongside each other. PM Modi, on the other hand, said that he was delighted to meet the President as well. The two leaders reviewed the bilateral ties between the two countries and discussed measures to diversify the relations between the two countries.

When Modi became the Prime Minister of India, the then PM of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam was the only non-SAARC leader to be invited to witness the swearing-in ceremony of the new Government in New Delhi in May 2014. Former EAM, Late Sushma Swaraj visited the country in November 2014, while PM Modi himself visited the nation in March 2015, as Chief Guest at the Mauritian National Day celebrations.

Multiple bilateral and plurilateral meetings 

The Prime Minister has held multiple bilateral and plurilateral meetings during his week-long visit to the United States. He has held meetings with leaders from across the world. He also had meetings with regional coalitions and alliances such as the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and India Pacific Island States (FIPIC).

Besides bilateral meetings, the PM attended a meeting hosted by the government to increase investment in India, which was attended by 42 business leaders from across the United States. The leaders of these companies were from a various number of sectors and industries, such as financial services, IT, business, retail, power, food processing, etc. He later had one-on-one interaction with seven firms - Mariott, IBM, Walmart, Coca Cola, Shell, Bank of America and Boeing.
