Manhattan sees the light after suffering a temporary power outage in the parts of New York - the city that never sleeps.

According to international news reports, the power outage which plunged  Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side was caused due to a mechanical problem in the electrical grid on Saturday night.

ConEdison, which is the main power provider there has said that the power outage that around 16,000 customers were rendered powerless, according to reports. At its peak, the number was about 72,000, it said.

The utility company has estimated most customers will have power restored by midnight.

New Yorkers were spotted at intersections directing traffic, a cancelled Broadway show was seen performing for fans on a crowded sidewalk, while tourists were seen looking sadly at the darkened neon signs at the otherwise vibrant Times Square. The outages come 42 years to the day of an extensive blackout that affected much of the city.
