Rep. Adam Schiff, the lead impeachment prosecutor against President Donald Trump, says "there seems to be a real shift in where the Republican senators are," in calling former national security adviser John Bolton as a witness.

Schiff spoke to reporters just during a break in Trump's Senate trial Monday.

Schiff denied allegations made by House Republican Representative Mark Meadows that he was involved the release of Bolton's draft.

"It came as quite a surprise to all of the House managers," Schiff said.

His comments come after Bolton wrote in an upcoming book that Trump told him he wanted to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid from Ukraine until that country helped him with investigations into his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

The account has given Democrats fuel in their pursuit of testimony from Bolton and other witnesses.

"At the end of the day, the senators cannot hide from a relevant witness who has come forward willing to testify," Schiff said.

Schiff rebutted Trump's defense arguments about former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani was a distraction in the case and their attack on the Bidens.

"Is it really this is a credible that this president, of all presidents, should have a deep found concern over the appearance of a conflict of interests, business interests of a presidential or vice presidential son or child," Schiff told reporters
