Texas troopers check drivers coming from Louisiana

The Texas Department of Public Safety is now doing checkpoints along the Louisiana border.

Drivers traveling along I-10 from Louisiana are being asked to exit at the Texas Welcome Center, a rest stop on the westbound side. Commercial traffic, including semi trucks, is able to bypass the checkpoint.

Traffic flowed quickly as troopers asked motorists about their travel plans.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott expanded an executive order that requires people traveling into Texas by road from Louisiana to self-quarantine. That order went into effect Monday, March 30th at noon.

Until Sunday, DPS had only increased patrols at the border, but the governor announced via Twitter that troopers would begin checkpoints.

Some drivers filled out the same paperwork that air travelers filled out at airports throughout Texas, which asks them to disclose where they'll be staying in Texas and advises them that they're subject to unannounced visits from the DPS.

Louisiana State Police issued a traffic advisory Sunday morning warning of potential traffic congestion when traveling west into Texas from Louisiana.

The advisory says that checkpoints and screening of vehicles leaving Louisiana may result in "traffic backups" in westbound lanes of travel.
