The US Department of Defense said the convention center opened to non-coronavirus patients on 30 March and coronavirus patients were brought in beginning 3 April.

The federal government is deploying 1,000 doctors, nurses and respiratory technicians to New York, including 325 who were scheduled to begin arriving in New York City as early as Sunday.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said the state's health care system remained over capacity and that it was running short on supplies.

More than 122,000 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in New York state and at least 16,000 people remain hospitalized.

The state reported 594 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday - a small decrease compared to the 630 new fatalities announced the day before.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
