Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced Monday that the state's guidance to stay home is no longer a suggestion – it's an order.

"Everyone in Virginia must remain in their place of residence unless they must go out for food, supplies, work, medical care or to get fresh air or exercise," he said at a news conference.

Northam also ordered higher education institutions to stop any in-person instruction amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The move is likely directed at Liberty University.

The evangelical college in Lynchburg led by President Jerry Falwell Jr. has faced intense criticism over its decision to welcome students back to campus last week after the end of their spring break.

The vast majority of classes have been moved online, but the university has said publicly that in-person instruction was necessary for a few select courses.

A spokesman said he couldn't immediately comment on Northam's order.

Northam added some Virginia beaches were still packed this weekend.

He called those people selfish, and said they "are putting all of us, especially our health care providers, at risk."

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
