Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers has issued an executive order to delay the state's scheduled Tuesday presidential primary election for two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The move on Monday injects more chaos and last-minute uncertainty amid growing criticism about the state's harried efforts to allow for in-person voting.

Republicans almost immediately said they would ask the state Supreme Court to block the order, calling Evers' decision "an unconstitutional overreach."

The Wisconsin election is being viewed as a national test case in a broader fight over voter access in the age of coronavirus with major implications for the presidential primary contests ahead — and, possibly, the November general election.

While several states had scheduled primaries in recent weeks, Wisconsin was alone in moving ahead with in-person voting in the midst of the pandemic. The move is even more extraordinary given that the state's Democratic governor has issued a stay at home order  and closed all nonessential businesses. Dozens of polling places have been closed.

The Wisconsin Election Commission warned municipal and county clerks to continue making preparations for an election Tuesday, just in case.

One southeastern Wisconsin poll worker was worried about in person voting Tuesday.

Scott Trindl, one of the chief election inspectors for Waukesha, said he's 65, has diabetes and has heart issues but he still felt he needed to do it. He said most of the poll workers are over 60 and many dropped out, so they had to consolidate 13 locations to one central location.

"The election is being run tomorrow. And if we want people to be able to vote and I do. Everybody should be able to vote.," he said.
