Washington state is creating a separate lottery to award cash prizes to veterans and active duty military personnel in the state who received their COVID-19 vaccines through the Department of Defense or the U.S. Veterans Administration.

Gov. Jay Inslee said that the military personnel were excluded from the state's vaccination lottery because the federal government was unable to initially provide the names.

Inslee said a separate lottery called "A Hero's Thanks" will award two $100,000 cash prizes and one $250,000 cash prize, as well as smaller prizes such as gift cards.

Inslee said the original incentive program for Washington state residents, which also includes a lottery, has helped reverse a downward trend in vaccination rates in the state.
