Trump Assassination Attempt: Day 2 of Congressional hearing resumes after recess

Day 2 of Congressional hearings over the US Secret Service oversights in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump has begun. On day 1, Kim Cheatle, Director of Secret Service spoke before a bipartisan group of lawmakers. Lawmakers from both the parties grilled Cheatle and some lawmakers even asked her to resign. 

So far, Cheatle has resisted the calls for resignation. However, she has admitted that the Secret Service failed in its duty to protest the former president. 

She said that she is the "best person to lead the Secret Service at this time." She added that “we must learn what happened and I will move heaven and earth to ensure an incident like July 13th does not happen again”.

The Congressional hearing has resumed. Chairman Mark Green is asking questions to Colonel Christopher L. Paris of Pennsylvania State Police right now.

“I accept full responsibility,” writes Cheatle

In an email to staff on Tuesday, Cheatle wrote that “I take full responsibility for the security lapse. In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director”.

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned. Resignation comes amidst widespread scrutiny. 

“There were critical failures,” says Yoes

Mr. Patrick Yoes says that there were critical failures and adds that it is important to learn from those failures. He again stresses the importance of collaboration between different law enforcement agencies.

 Mr. Patrick Yoes, National President, Fraternal Order of Police has started speaking. He began his address by praising the Secret Service agents. 

He is now talking about the importance of cooperation and collaboration between different law enforcement agencies. 

Commissioner of Pennsylvania State Police starts speaking

 Colonel Christopher L. Paris, Commissioner, Pennsylvania State Police has started speaking. He is explaining to the lawmakers what was the role of the Pennsylvania State Police during the Trump rally.

The two witnesses are Colonel Christopher L. Paris, Commissioner, Pennsylvania State Police and Mr. Patrick Yoes, National President, Fraternal Order of Police. 

“We must understand what happened,” says Bennie Thompson 

Congressman Bennie Thompson is speaking now. He says that “we must understand what happened to ensure it never happens again”. He is also using the hearing to speak against AR-15, which is one of the most popular firearm in the US.

The Congressional hearing has started. The purpose of the hearing is to examine the assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump. Right now, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security Congressman Mark Green (Republican) is speaking. According to Green, Cheatle, who testified before another committee yesterday, has refused to appear before the Homeland Security Committee today.
