White House Calls PM Modi’s Ukraine Visit ‘Potentially Helpful’
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed hope that Modi's trip might contribute to resolving the conflict.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ukraine today, marking the first visit by an Indian leader since the two countries established bilateral relations in 1992. Modi's arrival in Kyiv followed a seven-hour train journey from Poland and comes at a critical juncture in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The White House has described Modi's visit as "potentially helpful," according to a report by AFP. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby expressed hope that Modi's trip might contribute to resolving the conflict in a way that aligns with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's vision for a "just peace."
PM Modi's visit comes at a crucial time
The timing of Modi’s visit is notable as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered a new phase. Recently, Ukrainian forces have crossed the international border and taken control of several Russian settlements in Kursk, further intensifying the situation.
Richard R. Verma, the US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, emphasized the importance of the visit, stating, "I am delighted about this visit. I think this is an important visit -- Poland and Ukraine." This sentiment reflects the broader significance of PM Modi’s diplomatic engagement in the region.
PM Modi emphasized that this isn't an era of war
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's stance on the conflict, emphasizing that "this is not the era of war." India has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomacy as the path to resolving global conflicts. In a joint statement issued today, Modi and Zelensky highlighted their mutual interest in elevating their bilateral relationship from a comprehensive partnership to a strategic partnership in the future.
The joint statement also underscored India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict through continued dialogue. Ukrainian officials welcomed India's participation in the next Peace Summit and expressed interest in exploring opportunities for Indian companies to be involved in Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery efforts.
As the international community watches closely, PM Modi’s visit underscores the growing role of global diplomacy in addressing one of the most pressing conflicts of our time.
