Aam Aadmi Party to Test Perfomance

For the ruling AAP, success in these elections is crucial for maintaining its face. Determined to secure a strong showing, AAP has fielded five ministers and three MLAs to bolster its chances. The results will significantly impact the party's leadership, as poor performance could damage the reputations of these ministers and influence the party's future strategy.

AAP has also leveraged the arrest of its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, as an election issue, framing it within the context of their developmental work under Bhagwant Mann’s government. Key constituencies for AAP include Sangrur, a traditional stronghold where Bhagwant Mann has previously won, and Jalandhar, where the defection of Sushil Kumar Rinku to BJP has intensified the competition. With AAP having secured a landslide victory in the 2022 assembly elections, expectations are high for the party to replicate this success.

A Question of Survival for Shiromani Akali Dal

For the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), this election is critical for its survival. The party’s tally was reduced to only three seats in the last assembly elections, putting immense pressure on party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. The SAD is attempting to revive its fortunes with Sukhbir’s Punjab Bachao Yatra. This is the first Lok Sabha election SAD is contesting without its traditional ally, BJP, making the stakes even higher.

The party’s main focus is to retain its stronghold in Bathinda, where Sukhbir’s wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, is the sitting MP. Retaining this seat is vital for the party's morale and future prospects.

Congress' Fight to Regain Lost Ground

The Congress party is aiming to rebound from its significant setbacks in recent years. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress won eight seats under the leadership of former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh. However, internal turmoil saw their tally drop dramatically from 77 seats in the 2017 assembly elections to just 18 in 2022.

This election presents an opportunity for Congress to revive its electoral fortunes. Notable candidates include former CM Charanjit Singh Channi in Jalandhar and state Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in Ludhiana. Firebrand leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira is contesting against AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer in Sangrur. Despite their alliance as part of the INDIA bloc in other states, Congress and AAP are fiercely competing against each other across almost all seats in Punjab.

BJP: Aiming for Expansion

The BJP is contesting the Lok Sabha elections alone in Punjab for the first time. The party aims to retain its seats in Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur while increasing its overall vote share. This election is seen as a precursor to the next assembly elections, with a rise in vote share expected to boost the party's confidence and momentum.

To strengthen its position, BJP has strategically poached leaders from rival parties. Notable defections include sitting Congress Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu and AAP's lone sitting MP from Jalandhar, Sushil Rinku. The BJP has also fielded Capt. Amarinder Singh’s wife, Preneet Kaur, from her home turf in Patiala after she switched from Congress.

Impact of By-elections

Recent by-elections have also influenced the political scenario in Punjab. In 2022, Bhagwant Mann resigned from his MP position in Sangrur to become the Chief Minister of Punjab, leading to a by-election where Simranjit Singh Mann of the SAD (Amritsar) won against AAP’s Gurmail Singh. Similarly, the death of Jalandhar’s MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary (INC) led to a by-election in May 2023, where AAP’s Sushil Kumar Rinku triumphed over INC’s Karamjit Kaur.

The BJP’s decision to contest all seats independently is a significant shift from its traditional alliance with the SAD. This strategic move aims to expand the party's footprint in Punjab and capitalize on potential anti-incumbency sentiments against the current representatives. Taranjit Singh Sandhu’s candidacy in Amritsar is part of this broader strategy to leverage his diplomatic experience and patriotic credentials, particularly his role in prosecuting Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, to appeal to a diverse voter base.

Punjab's Exit Polls Predict Strong Showing for INDIA Bloc

Punjab appears poised to continue its trend of supporting opposition parties in the Lok Sabha, as exit polls suggest a majority of the state's 13 constituencies will favor the INDIA bloc in the 2024 general elections. Historically, Punjab has often backed the party that ends up in the opposition benches, a pattern expected to persist based on the latest projections.

The 13 constituencies in Punjab that went to the polls in the seventh and final phase on June 1 include Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Khadoor Sahib, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Anandpur Sahib, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Faridkot, Firozpur, Bathinda, Sangrur, and Patiala. The exit polls indicate significant gains for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is contesting all seats independently for the first time since 1996, having previously partnered with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
