Buying a Second-Hand Car? One Mistake Could Cost You Lakhs – Don’t Fall for the Trap!

Buying a car of your dreams is no longer original, but second-hand. Millions of Indians now opt for a used car as private transport. However, one has to stay vigilant to spot a car seller who is not a fraud.   

Here are key tips to keep in mind to protect your dream car from trouble and potential fraud. 

It is advised that you take an experienced mechanic with you to cross-question the nitty-gritty details of the vehicle. The mechanic will save your prince charming car and not let you regret your choice.  

Don't trust the seller's word unquestioningly; check the car yourself. Check for paint textures, tyres, and body to understand the car's situation. Similar to receding hair, a car will also lead to balding.   

Starting the car should be a very smooth process. Feel the suspension. A car ride out will tell whether the vehicle moves forward gently without jerks or vibrations. 

Document verification is the next crucial step. The Registration Certificate (RC) must have the dealer's name, or you are getting tricked into buying a third-hand car. The VIN and engine numbers must remain the same everywhere.  

Be aware that the insurance transfer will be done in your name with validity of at least three weeks post-purchase. If it doesn't, you can buy new insurance for your benefit. 

The Road Tax Certificate shows the car's emission levels, allowing you to ascertain the engine's condition. Cars can go under a pollution check if their emissions are high.  

Check analogue and digital odometers to spot potential tampering, which can make a car appear to have fewer kilometres. Call the service centre for information on the last servicing of the vehicle. 

Be cautious with vehicle modifications. Illegal changes like altering car colour, tweaking the engine, installing larger tires, modifying roofs, and using fancy number plates are against the law in India.
