PM Modi's 'Get Ready With Me' Call to Gen Z on National Handloom Day: Wear Handloom, Share Your Style, Support India's Weavers

New Delhi: Ahead of National Handloom Day on August 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to people, especially the youth, to celebrate India's rich handloom tradition by buying handloom products and sharing videos about them on social media. In a video message posted on his Instagram handle, the Prime Minister encouraged people to make "Get Ready With Me" (GRWM) videos featuring their favourite handloom outfits and use the hashtag #NationalHandloomDay to help showcase India's handloom diversity to the world.

Sharing the video, PM Modi wrote, “Tomorrow, 7th August is National Handloom Day. Let’s make India’s handloom diversity popular. Share your videos with your favourite handloom products, including GRWM videos on social media. Don’t forget to use #NationalHandloomDay."

In his message, the Prime Minister reminded people of the historical significance of August 7, saying it was on this day in 1905 that the Swadeshi Movement began during India's freedom struggle.

“Friends, we should not forget that on 7 August 1905, the Sodeshi movement started for the freedom of the country. And the Indian flag was raised in self-defence. The Indian people went into a huge battle against the British. The people united.”

Drawing a comparison with the recently celebrated Friendship Day, PM Modi urged people to mark National Handloom Day with the same excitement.

“Last week, you all celebrated Friendship Day. Today, I would like to invite you to celebrate Handloom Day on 7 August. We celebrate Handloom Day with such enthusiasm and zeal.”

Highlighting the importance of India's weaving community, he said celebrating Handloom Day is also a way of supporting families that earn their livelihood through handloom weaving.

"And celebrating Handloom Day means that every poor family, the Bunker family, who makes clothes from their own hands on the loom in their small house, and there are new varieties. You see what is not there."

The Prime Minister also appealed to people to use social media creatively to promote Indian handloom products.

"And you too, with a variety of handlooms, can make a GRWM video and put it in front of the world. You can inspire people for handlooms."

Calling for greater public participation, PM Modi said supporting handloom is also about strengthening India's economy and helping small families become financially secure.

"It is our job to make India a self-governing country. It is our job to make our small families financially prosperous. Come, let us buy something from the handloom ourselves. Make a video of it. And spread that video in the country and the world. So that the world is aware of the capabilities of our Bunker brothers and sisters."

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister said, “Come, 7 August, Handloom Day. I wish you all the best."

National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905 and to recognise the contribution of India's handloom sector to the country's cultural heritage and economy. The Centre has been observing the day since 2015 through various initiatives aimed at promoting indigenous textiles and encouraging people to support local weavers.

The latest Instagram message is also part of a series of direct-to-camera videos shared by the Prime Minister in recent weeks. Through this format, he has been connecting with people on social media while encouraging greater public participation in national campaigns. In this message, he particularly invited young people and social media users to make handloom a part of their everyday style by creating and sharing GRWM videos, helping bring global attention to India's traditional textiles while supporting weavers and small traders.
