JD(S) leader and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy has written to the Governor of the state mentioning that he has accepted the Congress party's support.

In a letter accessed by Republic TV, Kumaraswamy, son of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, has sought an appointment with the Governor.

In the letter Kumaraswamy has written:

"This is to submit to your good self that I have accepted the support extended by the Indian National Congress (I) party for forming the Government. In this regard, I seek your appointment today evening between 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm."

Kumaraswamy's letter comes shortly after the Congress party announcing at a briefing that it had offered its support to the JD(S) to form a government in Karnataka and that the JD(S) had accepted. A Congress representation had then attempted to meet the Governor but the Governor rejected the meeting request as the final results in the election aren't yet out.

A short while earlier, Siddaramaiah had submitted his resignation to the Governor.

The Karnataka Assembly elections come at a critical time in Indian politics, a year to go before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and a year after perhaps the BJP's biggest electoral achievement -- the stellar win in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Given that the last major win for the Opposition was in the Bihar elections in 2015 and Karnataka is the last large state, apart from Punjab, to be held by the Congress, it presents the BJP with a chance to go further than anybody ever has in making a 'Congress mukt Bharat', as has been party president Amit Shah's goal.
