Tata Motors takes a green leap with new hydrogen propulsion R&D facilities in Pune
The facilities comprise an engine test cell and infrastructure for storing and dispensing hydrogen for fuel cell and H2ICE vehicles.

Tata Motors has inaugurated two research and development facilities in Pune focused on advancing hydrogen propulsion technologies. These facilities include an engine test cell for the development of hydrogen internal combustion engines and the necessary infrastructure for storing and dispensing hydrogen fuel for both fuel cell and hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) vehicles.
The company views this as a step towards achieving carbon neutrality while harnessing the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
Tata Motors' Executive Director, Girish Wagh, emphasised their belief in hydrogen as the fuel of the future, particularly for commercial vehicles.
"We believe hydrogen to be the fuel of the future, especially for commercial vehicles. With the opening of this dedicated R&D facility to develop and indigenise hydrogen propulsion technology, we are entering a new era of technological innovations and advancements in green mobility," he said.
Rajendra Petkar, President and Chief Technical Officer of Tata Motors, highlighted the company's ongoing investment in hydrogen technology over several years, reaffirming its commitment to realising its full potential through ongoing research and product development.
