International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva highlighted the need for regulatory frameworks and robust infrastructure to address the potential risks posed by cryptocurrencies to financial stability. Speaking at a conference in Seoul focused on digital currencies, Georgieva said that the widespread adoption of crypto assets could undermine macro-financial stability.

During her opening speech, she remarked, "The challenge is that high crypto asset adoption could undermine macro-financial stability," and pointed out the potential impacts on monetary policy transmission, capital flow management measures, and fiscal sustainability due to the volatility in tax collection.

The conference, jointly held with the South Korean government and central bank, aimed to explore avenues for creating a more efficient, interoperable, and accessible financial system while mitigating the risks associated with cryptocurrencies.

Georgieva asserted that the goal is not to revert to a pre-crypto era but to establish rules that guide innovation and prevent risks associated with crypto assets. "Good rules can spur and guide innovation," she remarked, underlining the need for a balanced approach.

Addressing the development of digital currencies in a panel discussion, Georgieva said that policymakers could either be active participants in shaping this evolution or risk being left behind. She acknowledged the "tremendous interest" in cross-learning, particularly from emerging markets, highlighting India for its robust digital public infrastructure.
