The state government of Karnataka has approved a Rs 4 per liter increase in milk prices, starting from April 1, 2025.

What Has Been Announced?

K. Venkatesh, the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture announced this decision on Thursday and addressed several persistent demands of farmers as well as various organizations, and the Department of Animal Husbandry.

Milk federations across Karnataka have welcomed this decision with open arms after several deliberations with the Karnataka Cabinet.

What Will Revised Prices Achieve?

Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, had previously stated that any revision of price would be considered only if the full additional amount benefits the dairy farmers directly.

After initial resistance of the hike, he came on board with the decision and assured the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) that a cabinet decision would be taken soon.

Why Were Farmers' Organizations Protesting?

KMF, along with other farmers' organizations has been pushing for Rs 5 per liter increase but the state government has eventually settled at Rs 4, as per a report by IANS.

Earlier in February, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Green Brigade staged a protest at the KMF office in Bengaluru, with a demand for raising the milk procurement price to at least Rs 50 per liter. They additionally called for an interim support price of Rs 10 per liter until a Minimum Support Price (MSP) could be implemented.
