The Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay opened up about his fondness for Indian cuisine, particularly its irresistible desserts, in an exclusive interview with Republic Business. When asked about his favorite Indian dish, the Bhutanese leader didn’t hesitate to declare his love for rasmalai, a rich and creamy dessert he recently indulged in during a visit to an Indian restaurant in Bhutan. “Indian sweets? Who isn’t fond of them?” the PM exclaimed. He reminisced about overindulging in rasmalai, rasgullas, and gulab jamuns, saying, “I ate one too many rasmalais,” but added with a smile, “They’re just too good to resist!”
But it’s not just the sweets that connect the Bhutanese leader to India. When asked about his best memory of India and its culture, the PM took a walk down memory lane. “One of my most cherished memories is from my school days at Dr. Graham's Homes, located just a few kilometers from the Mela Ground in town,” he said. “Every 15th of August, as an NCC cadet, I’d march down with my fellow cadets to take part in the Independence Day celebrations at the Mela Ground. It was a deeply powerful experience that I looked forward to every year.”
For the Bhutanese PM, his days as an NCC cadet, participating in the grand Independence Day celebrations, are unforgettable. “It wasn’t just about marching; it was about feeling part of something bigger. It was an honor to stand alongside Indian students in those moments,” he recalled.
