Chip Plant Set for 2025: Tata Electronics is set to revolutionise Assam's industrial landscape with its upcoming Rs 27,000 crore chip assembly plant, which is expected to commence operations by 2025. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced the milestone during the Bhumi Pujan ceremony held on Saturday, highlighting the project's potential to generate 27,000 jobs.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
Chandrasekaran revealed that the new facility will create 27,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct positions and 12,000 additional indirect roles. The plant’s development will be phased, with the initial phase already having employed 1,000 people from Assam. The broader semiconductor ecosystem surrounding the plant will also see significant growth, as suppliers and related industries establish a presence in the region.
Support from Local and National Leaders
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who attended the ceremony, described the event as a 'golden day' for Assam. He assured that the state would provide full support to Tata Electronics, emphasising the plant's potential to spur industrial growth and provide job opportunities for local youth. Sarma credited the initiative to the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Electronics Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who facilitated the establishment of the facility in Assam.
Sarma recalled his previous interaction with Chandrasekaran, where the Tata executive had agreed to support the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Guwahati. The chief minister noted that despite a decline in insurgency, private-sector investment in Assam had been limited until now. The chip plant represents a significant step forward in addressing these challenges and attracting further investment to the state.
