Global shipping and logistics company UPS Technologies has inaugurated its first technology centre in Chennai signalling its entry into the Indian tech landscape. The new facility, spanning 51,000 sq ft, is already operational and has hired 100 employees. Plans are in place to expand the workforce by adding 350 more staff members by the end of this year.
Workforce expansion
The company envisions a broader expansion, aiming to employ 1,000 individuals across the country by 2025. Earlier in the year, UPS announced a strategic investment of $15-20 million (approximately Rs 123.92 crore to Rs 165.23 crore) in India to bolster its technology capabilities.
The centre will be led by Subramani Ramakrishan, who holds the position of Vice President for UPS Technology Centres in India. The facility will focus on innovations that enhance the customer experience and streamline business operations, utilising technologies such as AI, automation, and robotics. UPS intends to collaborate with the Indian government on initiatives related to skill development and will conduct community workshops for career counselling and training.
"These centres will enable us to offer an unparalleled logistics experience for our customers through advanced technologies, including AI, automation, and robotics," Bala Subramanian, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Technology Officer at UPS, said.
