US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer has confirmed that he will convene a high-profile closed-door artificial intelligence (AI) forum on September 13, featuring renowned tech luminaries including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, among others, according to an announcement from Schumer's office on Monday.
The exclusive event, slated to be bipartisan, will also welcome OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, adding a diverse perspective to discussions about the future of AI. The upcoming forum has gained significant attention due to the increasing global focus on regulating and harnessing the potential of AI technology.
Governments worldwide are grappling with the challenges and opportunities posed by this rapidly advancing technology, which has surged in popularity and investment, particularly with the emergence of OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Schumer had previously indicated his intention to create a forum that lays the groundwork for comprehensive AI policies, emphasising the necessity of bringing together a diverse group of AI stakeholders, from developers and scientists to community leaders and security experts.

Formulating global regulations on AI
"We need the best of the best sitting at the table: the top AI developers, executives, scientists, advocates, community leaders, workers, national security experts - all together in one room, doing years of work in a matter of months," Schumer stated, as cited on the Senate Democrats' website.
Given the potential of generative AI to craft text and visuals with virtually undetectable artificial origins, regulators globally have been striving to formulate effective rules to govern its usage. Its transformative impact has been likened to the advent of the internet.

Addressing the national security and economic implications of artificial intelligence is a priority, noted US President Joe Biden in June, as he expressed his intention to seek guidance from experts in the field.
Moreover, Biden has engaged in discussions about AI with other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The UK government plans to host a global summit on the safety of artificial intelligence later this year, reflecting the growing international consensus on the importance of addressing AI's potential with careful consideration.
