The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embarking on a significant upgrade program for its fleet of Russian-origin Su-30 MKI combat aircraft. As part of this endeavour, the IAF is set to equip these aircraft with an indigenous advanced radar system named 'Virupaaksha.' This program is part of a larger initiative to strengthen the country's defence capabilities and promote indigenization within the military sector.
Officials within the defence sector have expressed optimism about the development of 'Virupaaksha' and its potential impact on military capabilities. This indigenous radar system will not only bolster the Su-30MKI fleet but also strengthen the broader indigenization efforts within the country's defence sector.
Su-30MKI: A cornerstone of IAF's strength
The Su-30 fighter jets are a cornerstone of the Indian Air Force's operational strength, with approximately 260 of them currently in service. These jets have been inducted in multiple batches and now constitute nearly 50 per cent of the IAF's fighter aircraft fleet.
'Virupaaksha' takes its name from one of the many epithets of Lord Shiva, revered by Hindus worldwide. The Indian Air Force is committed to reducing its dependence on foreign technologies and has already made strides in this direction. For instance, it has chosen to replace the Israeli radar on the LCA Tejas Mark 1A fighter jet with the indigenous Uttam Actors Electronically Scanned Array radar, accompanied by the Angad electronic warfare suite.

As the IAF undertakes the Su-30MKI fleet upgrade program, it also eyes export opportunities, particularly for countries in Southeast Asia and Africa that operate these aircraft. The indigenous solutions being integrated into the Su-30MKI can provide advanced capabilities to international fleets.
India's role in Su-30MKI advancements
India's prominence as one of the largest operators of Su-30MKI fighters has made it a key player in enhancing the aircraft's capabilities. Over the years, India has consistently equipped these aircraft with new technologies and capabilities, contributing to their operational excellence. The upgrade of the Su-30MKI fleet is a testament to India's commitment to self-reliance and bolstering its defence capabilities, as well as its aspirations to extend these advancements to international partners operating the same aircraft.
