Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to increase production of the Tejas MK-1A fighter jets, aiming to meet the growing demand of the Indian Air Force (IAF). A new production line in Nashik will help accelerate the delivery of 83 Tejas MK-1A fighters ordered by IAF in February 2021.

Recent announcements by IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari have highlighted the IAF's intention to order an additional 97 Tejas MK-1As at an estimated cost of ₹67,000 crore. This demonstrates the IAF's confidence in HAL's ability to meet delivery timelines.

Anticipated production rate and ancillary industry involvement

HAL has the capacity to manufacture 16 Tejas MK-1A aircraft annually in Bangalore. The addition of the Nashik production line will allow HAL to reach a total production capacity of 24 jets. This expansion will enable the IAF to receive the first MK-1A in February 2024, a year earlier than the originally contracted delivery schedule.

The production line at Nashik is already being prepared for assembly, with the first aircraft expected to roll out in December 2024. HAL aims to deliver three aircraft from Nashik in 2024-25 and eight annually thereafter. The Nashik region boasts a robust ecosystem of micro, small, and medium enterprises that will play a crucial role in supplying structural parts and components.

Improved features and ongoing development

HAL's primary focus for the 97 additional MK-1As is meeting IAF's requirements. While specific improvements are yet to be determined, HAL remains open to enhancements that fit within the design. The first 83 MK-1As will come with additional systems and features based on IAF's requests. Continuous upgrades and flexibility are key features of the TEJAS aircraft.

The TEJAS fighter jet is poised to become a central element of IAF's combat power, with plans for approximately 350 TEJAS aircraft in various configurations. The Tejas MK-1A and MK-2 versions will introduce significant improvements and advanced technologies to strengthen IAF's capabilities and modernization roadmap. As production ramps up, HAL is committed to meeting IAF's needs, ensuring the country's air defense remains robust and capable.
