The festive season is here. School students will get a plethora of holidays to celebrate the upcoming festivals. Starting with Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, the month will have various significant religious and cultural holidays extending to Diwali on November 1. 

While many holidays are observed nationwide, some are specific to certain states, so students and parents should confirm details with their respective schools to avoid any confusion. Here’s a detailed list of the major school holidays in October 2024:

October 2 Gandhi Jayanti 

Gandhi Jayanti is observed on October 2 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India's independence struggle. This day is observed as a national holiday and all schools, colleges, offices, and businesses across the country remain closed to honour his legacy. 

Following this, the Navratri festival will begin on October 3. However, schools in some areas are closed from the Panchami i.e., October 8 or Saptami, falling on October 10. The schools will reopen on October 14, Monday, after Vijaya Dashami i.e. on October 13.

On October 17, schools in many regions will observe a holiday for Valmiki Jayanti, which celebrates the birth of the sage and poet Valmiki, the author of the epic Ramayana. The day is significant in Hindu culture and is marked by various religious observances and celebrations. However, schools in some regions remain open on this day. 

The month will conclude with Chhoti Diwali falling on October 31. Diwali will be celebrated on November 1.
