Avengers 4 title 'leaked' by Russo brothers at Comic-Con but we still don't know what it's called. Here's why

Despite the 2018 edition of the San Diego Comic-Con being shorn of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones, both of which are to reach dramatic conclusions next year, fans did almost end up getting what they want, but not exactly.

Despite the 2018 edition of the San Diego Comic-Con being shorn of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones, both of which are to reach dramatic conclusions next year, fans did almost end up getting what they want, but not exactly.

The Russo brothers, Joe and Antony, who have directed a number of key Marvel movies, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and will be directing Avengers 4, were on hand for a series that they are working on and decided to tease (troll) their fans.

Here's what happened

While the Russos weren't physically at Comic-Con, on account of a series that they're producing for Syfy, called Deadly Class, the duo sent in a video message to be played before the panel discussion for said series.

In the video, the Russo brothers thanked their fans, told them a little bit about their upcoming series, and then apologised for not being able to make it in person. They cited that they were busy working on, what accounts quote as, "a little movie called Avengers: ..."

At that point, it just so happened that the sound was beeped so that the full title couldn't be made out. The siblings then bantered for a bit about who had spoilt the title but when they made to say the name again, it was beeped out once more. Attempts to lipread the answer also bore no fruit on account of the Russos not really speaking out any names, rather just mouthing gibberish.

So all-in-all, Avengers fans didn't end up getting so much out of Comic-Con. However, they probably had already got their gifts early as just a few weeks ago, a cinematographer who had worked on all the Marvel films with them had let slip on the Filmography section of his website that the title of the fourth Avengers film would be Avengers: End Game. This tallied with a popular fan theory that cited the phrase having been used before, notably by Doctor Strange in one of his final dialogues before falling victim to Thanos' snap as well as by Iron Man in a previous film.

Not the only 'faux-pas'

Oddly, the Russos' 'spoiler' wasn't the only apparent faux-pas regarding Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel is also said to have posted and quickly deleted a video highlighting the powers of the six Infinity Stones that have been a major plot device in the series so far. The video purportedly cut together parts of the previous films to explain the stones' powers.

What this means:

We know a bit about some of the stones, but there are also those which remain a complete mystery. For instance, the Space stone (Tesseract), Power stone (Orb), Time stone (Eye of Agamotto), Mind stone (Vision), Reality stone (Ether) are familiar to fans to varying degrees, while the Soul stone is one big mystery.

Finally, one visit to the Russos' Twitter timeline will reveal that they've retweeted a photo regarding the next Marvel movie, Captain Marvel that'd really whet fans' appetites. It shows Captain Marvel standing before what looks like the collected weapons of all the Avengers (with some bodyparts thrown in) and facing down an approaching Thanos. It's fan art, but the Russos retweeting it is something to get excited about!

Avengers: Infinity War releases on DVD and digital formats over the next two weeks, while Captain Marvel will hit theatres on March 8, 2019, and Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019.
