YouTube sensation Lilly Singh is al set to make a bold leap as she stars on a late-night TV show, NBC’s A Little Late With Lilly Singh on Monday. The latest move by the YouTube star challenges the curfew barring female hosts from late-night network TV. It is expected that more female hosts will join the bandwagon to break such rules. Singh will be only the second woman of colour to host a late-night show on a major network. Two decades ago, former VH1 VJ Cynthia Garrett was in charge of NBC’s Later for a year. Joan Rivers had an equally brief tenure as the first woman to host a daily late-night show on Fox.

Challenges ahead for Lilly

The Canadian-born, daughter of Indian immigrants, Lilly Singh is going to face a lot of expectations and she said that she is ready for it. The only woman on Forbes’ 2017 list of highest-paid YouTube stars with estimated earnings of $10 million said that it’s a lot of pressure but also a huge honour and that she was focusing on the latter. “I’m focusing on how exciting this business is and how much it could mean, rather than focusing on, ‘Oh my God. What will people think, and what if this messes up?’ So I’m just having fun while I do it and I think that’s going to get the best result, ultimately,” said Singh.

Network’s confidence in Lilly

George Cheeks, Network Executive of NBC said that Singh is a “flat-out star and NBC has full confidence in her. “Lilly is bold, inherently positive and hilarious. She has such a different perspective than anyone else on television right now, and she embraces her whole self authentically and without apology,” said Cheeks. "Paul (Telegdy) and I have often said that if she had never been on YouTube and came in to audition with zero social media presence, we would have given her this show. Her talent transcends platforms and she has this undeniable charisma that immediately pulls you into her orbit,” Cheeks added.

The story behind ‘Superwoman’

Lilly Singh, famously known as Superwoman because of her YouTube Channel name, announced last month that she was putting an end to that moniker and changed the Instagram handle to @Lilly. “Based on a song by Lil Mo and Fabulous, I used to call myself Superwoman growing up because like any kid I wanted so badly to deal with life’s obstacles like a hero. As I grew up, I held on to this belief that everyone could be their own superhero,” Singh wrote on her Instagram profile. “It’s been heartwarming and empowering to hear people address me as Superwoman, a name I worked so hard to live up to. But today as I type this, as the person I’ve grown into, I feel even more empowered by the name Lilly. Lilly has become an even bigger hero than Superwoman on this journey through my life. Lilly encompasses everything it took to get to where I am... and it’s a place I’m proud to be. And so at this time, it feels right to give thanks to the moniker. Superwoman and to lay the cape to rest. Today my biggest and best superpowers lay within Lilly and thus Lilly I shall be. Aka new handle is @Lilly,” she further added.
