Suriya's legal drama movie Jai Bhim was released on November 2 on Amazon Prime, upon release the movie received critical acclaim. However, the movie also became a subject of controversy as several people from the Vanniyar community claimed that certain depictions in the story allegedly showed them in poor light. Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, the youth leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and a Member of Parliament also called out Suriya and the crew of Jai Bhim to answer his questions regarding the portrayal of the Vanniyar community in the movie.

Suriya has now replied to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss via a letter shared on his social media handle. The actor said that it wasn't his intention to hurt the sentiments of any people or community.

Suriya replies to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss

Dr Anbumani Ramadoss called out Suriya for remaining silent regarding the movie's controversy in a statement. The rough translation of his statement in English from Tamil read, "There are reports that the film titled 'Jai Bhim' starring yourself in the lead and directed by TS Gnanavell has caused pain and unrest among the majority community of the Vanniyars in Tamil Nadu. Thousands of people and young people are telling me about the extent to which the Vanniyar community has been deliberately humiliated in the movie. Your unjust silence on the issue for over a week is what has forced me to write this letter. No matter who is involved when repression is unleashed on people it is not acceptable and we must all fight together against it."

Suriya also issued a statement replying to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. The rough translation of his statement in English reads,

"Respected member of TN State Assembly Dr Anbumani Ramadoss,

The core of 'Jai Bhim' movie is to portray how Advocate Chandru, in one of his cases, 'fought against authorities and restored justice through the means of law'. We have also tried to discuss the everyday difficulties of the tribal communities. Our intention was never to disrespect any individual or a community, unlike the mention in your letter.

I accept your statement that nobody has the rights to misuse creative freedom to attack people. However, I'd also like to believe you'd accept my view that creativity should not be threatened at any cost.We did put up a disclaimer at the start of the movie that no character or name was created to disregard any particular individual.

I request you to not politicise the movie as our intention was to portray that authorities, irrespective of the community they belong to, tend to misuse their power rather than help common people. In the midst of 'naming politics', the true intention of the movie, which is to raise the voice against injustice, is being tarnished.

I'm doing my best to raise the level of living of my fellow people. I also have the unconditional support and love of people throughout the country. I do not have any necessity to perform advertising stunts.  Thank you for your understanding."

'Jai Bhim'

Jai Bhim is reportedly based on a true incident in 1993, which involves a case fought by Justice K Chandru, it follows Senggeni and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. Rajakannu was arrested by the police and was later missing from the police station. Senggeni seeks the help of an advocate Chandru to seek justice for her husband. Chandru files a habeas corpus case and he refers Rajan case to continue further to find the truth.
