Ektaa Kapoor becomes first Indian woman filmmaker to receive an International Emmy Directorate Award

During the 51st International Emmy Awards held in New York, Ektaa R Kapoor, achieved a historic milestone. The producer was bestowed with the prestigious International Emmy Directorate Award, making her as the first Indian woman filmmaker to receive this esteemed accolade.

What did Ektaa Kapoor say about her win?

Upon receiving the International Emmy Directorate Award, Ektaa Kapoor expressed her joy and gratitude. She acknowledged the power of storytelling as a means to be "heard, seen, and represented". Kapoor attributed her success to the love and support of the audience, stating how their appreciation opened doors for her to transition seamlessly from television to films and OTT platforms.

Kapoor reflected on the profound impact each of her stories had on connecting with audiences on multiple levels. She said, "I’m delighted to receive the prestigious Emmys Directorate Award! It brings me immense joy and happiness to be honoured at a global scale, such as this. I’ve always wanted to tell stories because they give me a chance to be heard, seen and represented."

The producer also took to social media and shared a glimpse of the coveted trophy. Expressing her happiness, she wrote, "India I’m bringing home YOUR Emmy @iemmys."

Other Indians at Emmys

Shefali Shah, Jim Sarbh and Vir Das secured nominations in different categories. The comedian shared the Emmy award with the popular UK comedy series Derry Girls - Season 3. Shefali and Jim, on the other hand, failed to bag awards. Shah received a nomination for Best Actress for her role in Delhi Crime Season 2 and stood alongside Denmark’s Connie Nielsen, the UK’s Billie Piper, and Mexico’s Karla Souza.

Meanwhile, Jim lost to Martin Freeman in the Best Performance by an Actor category. He secured a nomination for his role in the series Rockey Boys. He went shoulder-to-shoulder with Argentina’s Gustavo Bassani, the UK’s Martin Freeman, and Sweden’s Jonas Karlsson.
