Emmys 2024: Anna Sawai, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jodie Foster, Liza Colón-Zayas - Meet First Time Winners
Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada won their first Emmy Awards for Shogun while Jodie Fsoter bagged the honour for True Detective: Night Country.

Emmys 2024: There were a few first-time Emmy winners at the 76th edition of the award ceremony, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. Jodie Foster became the first actor from the anthology series True Detective to bag an acting Emmy, ending the losing streak of the critically acclaimed franchise. Shogun stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai became the first Japanese actors to bag the Primetime Emmy Awards in the leading actor categories.
Shogun wins big at Emmys
Shogun came in strong with 14 wins at the precursor Creative Arts Emmy Awards. It extended its record-breaking run with 4 more honours at the Primetime Emmys, making it 18 in total, the highest for a series in a single season. Lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai became the first Japanese actors to bag Emmys in the leading actor categories. It was an emotional moment for Sanada and Sawai as they celebrated their big wins by taking the stage and speaking about inclusivity from the stage.
Later in the ceremony, Shogun also bagged the Best Drama Series win, defeating The Crown, The Gilded Age, Slow Horses, The Morning Show, Fallout, 3 Body Problem and Mr and Mrs Smith.
Jodie Foster becomes an Emmy winner
Jodie Foster put an end to the True Detective franchise’s losing streak by winning the Best Actress in a Limited Series Emmy Award for her lead performance in True Detective: Night Country. This also marked Foster’s first Emmy win. She Foster is also a two-time Oscar winner.

At the Emmys, Foster earned her first nomination as a producer of The Baby Dance, which was nominated for Best TV Movie and lost to A Lesson Before Dying. Fifteen years later, The Silence of the Lambs star was nominated for Best Director of a Comedy Series for Orange Is the New Black, but lost to Gail Mancuso of Modern Family. True Detective: Night Country served as the first time she was recognised for acting by the TV Academy. The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas also bagged her first Emmy becoming the first Latina to win in the category.
