Abhay Deol is one of the actors in Bollywood who has played a wide range of roles in his career, including characters that defined stereotypes such as Dev D and Oye Lucky! Lucky! Oye. In a recent interview, he opened up about the same. He was also asked about how he perceives sexuality while discussing his upcoming movie Bun Tikki, helmed by a non-binary, openly queer director, Faraz Arif.
In an interview with The Dirty Magazine, Abhay shared that he refuses the Western way of identifying sexuality because it is so black and white. According to him, the Eastern approach is “different.” He added, I don't define my sexuality, and this might sound controversial but for me, it's not something that I think can be defined."
In his opinion “we are all they/them” and thinks it's more for the other person’s comfort so that they can put “you in a box”. The actor continued, “Why should I define myself in Western terms? I have embraced all experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don't know how to label that I don’t want to label that. All of us have a masculine and feminine within us, so in my opinion we are all they/them."
In the same conversation, the actor shared how he sees masculinity as the “ability to make people feel safe and included”. As a man, Abhay feels like a “protector and provider” and admitted that he would “happily give up his sense of taking charge and leading to a woman too is she wanted to take charge and lead”.
Abhay was last seen two years ago in Jungle Cry. Next, he will be seen probably this year in Manish Malhotra’s production house movie Bun Tikki. It also stars legendary actresses Shabana Azmi and Zeenat Aman. Apart from them, it also stars Randeep Hooda’s wife Lin Laishram in the movie.
