Bobby Deol admits to feeling 'disgusted' while doing Ashram - here's why
Besides Animal and Ashram, Bobby Deol was also appreciated for his performance in the 2022 film Love Hostel, where he played the role of a cold-blooded hitman.
During a recent roundtable interview for Film Companion, actor Bobby Deol opened up about how he now knows better than to judge the character he plays, be it positive or negative. The actor had recently received great acclaim for his performance in the Ranbir Kapoor starrer Animal.
I felt disgusted during Ashram: Bobby Deol
Speaking to the host, Bobby Deol recalled how he would often disgusted early on while shooting for the popular web series Ashram. In Ashram, Bobby Deol plays a religious godmen who hides underneath his soft-spoken interior a beastly personality capable of great evil and vile things. Talking about how he reassured himself while shooting some discomforting moments, Deol added, “I was feeling icky. Then I realized I am playing a character - why am I feeling so disgusted.”
Talking about Ashram role, Deol added, “My character there was so evil. Yet, I was portraying evil people like those who live in our society. I wasn’t trying to promote that kind of people. I want to promote the idea that there are many people like that in society, and that we have to careful of them.”
I didn't think I was the villain: Deol on Animal role
At the same time, Bobby Deol also spoke about the kind of thoughts and feelings that went into his acting process in Animal. Bobby Deol started out by clarifying that he doesn’t necessarily see Abrar Ul Haque (his character in Animal) as negative. He added, “When I was told the story, I didn’t think I was the villain.” Elaborating on how he channeled his love for his family into playing the vengeant character, Deol added, “My family means everything to me. We will do anything for each other. If someone kills my brother, I can become a savage. I think these thoughts make an actor perform.”
Responding to all the acclaim coming his way after his career’s revival, Bobby Deol stated, “God has given me a second chance, and I am very grateful. I am just trying to do different stuff - for an actor, that’s what it is.”
