Chandu Champion, starring Kartik Aaryan, is based on India's first Paralympic gold medallist, Murlikant Petkar. The movie opened at ₹5.40 crore at the domestic box office and saw a major jump over the next two days. In the first weekend, the biographical drama managed to mint ₹24.11 crore. However, on Monday, the daily collection witnessed a major downfall, despite the Monday holiday.
Helmed by Kabir Khan, the movie managed to earn ₹6.01 crore. Seeing the Monday collection, it earned higher than what the movie minted on the first day, hence passing the first-weekday test. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh predicted that the movie is expected to earn well at the box office due to the holiday on Monday. However, adding the fourth-day collection, the total now stands at ₹30.12 crore. Chandu Champion had an overall 20.67 per cent Hindi occupancy on Monday with the maximum reported in Jaipur (31.25 per cent).
Sharvari Wagh and Abhay Verma starrer Munjya have affected the business of Chandu Champion. The movie is steady and unstoppable at ₹58.55 crore, adding the Monday collection (4.75 crore). Munjya managed to earn more footfall than Chandu Champion. Munjya had an overall 28.88 per cent Hindi occupancy on Monday with the maximum reported in Chennai (52 per cent).
Murlikant Petkar, on whom Chandu Champion is based, had won an individual gold medal in the 1972 Summer Paralympics, in Heidelberg, Germany. He set a world record in the 50 m freestyle swimming event, at 37.33 seconds. In the same games, he participated in javelin, precision javelin throw and slalom. In 2018, he was awarded with the Padma Shri.
Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, under Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the movie also stars Vijay Raaz, Bhuvan Arora, Yashpal Sharma and Rajpal Yadav.
