Bollywood News: Sports-drama Lagaan is still loved today for its brilliant storyline and the acting skills of its cast members. The film was released on June 15, 2001. Recently, actor Yashpal Sharma revealed a few details of what happened on the sets while shooting.

Yashpal Sharma thought Aamir Khan would be ‘arrogant’

In an interaction with Friday Talkies YouTube channel, Yashpal Sharma said “I thought Aamir would be arrogant, because that’s what my experiences with stars had taught me. In fact, some NSD graduates would also think of themselves as stars… But Aamir is a wonderful human being, first and foremost."

He further added, “He would sit in the dirt and drink tea out of a paper cup. He organised a cards club; we would get together every evening and play cards. Maybe it was Aamir’s strategy to keep everybody away from women and booze, and from getting into random fights. Everybody was together on that set, and we maintained it for over five months. The passion, the late nights, the camaraderie all translated onto the screen.”

"Look at Aamir’s humility, he invites us to his house for card parties every Diwali,” he concluded.

About Lagaan

Lagaan is not based on a true story. The year set in the movie i.e, 1893 was a time when cricket wasn’t even played by Indians.

In the year 1893, the villagers of Champaner await meeting their Raja. They want to ask for an exemption from tax (Lagaan) but the Raja is busy watching the British play a match of cricket. A young farmer named Bhuvan mocks the game. This is overheard by the company captain, Andrew Russell who later challenges Bhuvan to a game of cricket in return for canceling their tax, a bet that Bhuvan accepts.
